چکیده
We describe a 27-year-old man with acute cholecystitis, hepatic abscess, and bacteremia caused by Clostridium hathewayi, a newly described gram-negative, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium. This report is the first of human infection caused by this microorganism.

Bacteremia due to Clostridium hathewayi in a patient with acute appendicitis.
Clostridium hathewayi is a newly described Clostridium species isolated from the feces of healthy human individuals, but its clinical significance is not known. We describe a case of human infection associated with C. hathewayi. The bacterium (strain HKU18) was isolated from the blood culture of a 39-year-old patient with acute gangrenous appendicitis complicated by septic shock. The cells were...
متن کاملCharacterization of an antibiotic resistant Clostridium hathewayi strain from a continuous-flow exclusion chemostat culture derived from the cecal contents of a feral pig.
The chemostat model has been an important tool in studying intestinal microflora. To date, several competitive exclusion products have been developed from such studies as prophylactic treatment against pathogenic bacteria. A continuous-flow chemostat model of a feral pig was developed using inocula from the cecal contents of a wild boar caught in East Texas. Several strains of antibiotic-sensit...
متن کاملClostridium aldenense sp. nov. and Clostridium citroniae sp. nov. isolated from human clinical infections.
One hundred eight isolates were previously identified in our laboratory as Clostridium clostridioforme by colonial and cellular morphology, as well as biochemical tests. Recent studies have indicated that there are actually three different species in this C. clostridioforme group: C. hathewayi, C. bolteae, and C. clostridioforme. Our isolates were reexamined using biochemical and enzymatic test...
متن کاملFirst isolation of Clostridium amygdalinum from a patient with chronic osteitis.
We describe a case of osteitis caused by a new and unusual Clostridium species, Clostridium amygdalinum, an environmental, moderately thermophilic bacterium. This is the first documented report of human infection caused by this organism.
متن کاملThe complete genome sequence of Clostridium indolis DSM 755T
Clostridium indolis DSM 755(T) is a bacterium commonly found in soils and the feces of birds and mammals. Despite its prevalence, little is known about the ecology or physiology of this species. However, close relatives, C. saccharolyticum and C. hathewayi, have demonstrated interesting metabolic potentials related to plant degradation and human health. The genome of C. indolis DSM 755(T) revea...
